JAMIE POY’S STORY:
After decades of working as a contractor and enduring numerous twists and tweaks, I woke up one morning in December 2014 unable to feel my hands and sensing a very “bad” tingling deep in my neck. The pain increased in severity and by the time I got to the hospital it was excruciating. After multiple tests I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), and I thought how ironic it was, as I had been participating in events to raise money for the National MS Society for over 20 years. However, several months into seeing neurologists who specialized in MS it became apparent that my situation was not conforming to the usual diagnosis. My wife, Rachel, figured out that I should see a specialist at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, and after a spinal angiogram it turned out that I did not have MS. Instead, I had suffered a very rare event -- a spinal cord stroke that created a permanent lesion between C3-C5.
Fortunately, I have recovered a lot of function in the years since 2014, and this experience profoundly changed my outlook on life. I now have a very real and personal understanding of the difficulties that living with mobility problems can cause. I have also realized that quality of life is the most important piece of life’s puzzle. This was the inspiration for me to found FAI.
FAI is committed to renovating living spaces to rebuild and restore quality of life for those with physical needs.
